WHAT IS EMDR THERAPY?

EMDR is extensively researched, evidence based and effective psychotherapy method. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing and is a revolutionary therapy for trauma and various other types of emotional distress.

The idea behind EMDR is that traumatic events are not processed at the time they happened but are instead “locked” into the brain. Without processing, these memories can be suddenly “triggered” by sights, sounds, smells, emotions, and/or physical sensations.

EMDR allows the brain to return and process these memories in a safe way using alternating eye movements, hand taps or sounds. EMDR is a complex procedure and can only be done by a highly trained practitioner.

Upon the completion of EMDR client's report a reduction in the vividness, intensity and emotion associated with the traumatic memories.

No homework is required on the part of the client with EMDR and drastic change and enormous positive shifts are often reported following each session, with the total therapy often requiring far fewer sessions than all other conventional talk based therapies.

HOW DOES EMDR WORK?

After the therapist and client agree that EMDR is a good fit, the client will work through the eight phases of EMDR with their therapist.

A typical EMDR therapy session lasts from 50-75 minutes.  Clients often find the most benefit in scheduling sessions 1-2 times per week.  EMDR therapy can be used in conjunction with standard talking therapy.

During the phases of EMDR the client will reprocess and change their negative image, belief, emotion, and body sensation related to the traumatic event.

The process of bilateral stimulation used during EMDR allows the brain to naturally heal from trauma
